The (Paradoxical) Principle of Care

Writer's picture: Abby AmpujaAbby Ampuja

Most mornings, I wake up and do a guided meditation on Calm.com. This practice seems to fill up my ‘well of resilience’, giving me greater capacity to hold whatever experiences might unfold throughout the day. One of the topics that is often the focus of these meditations is care. And I've started to realize that the act of caring is a rather curious thing, because its impact can extend far beyond what we might expect at first glance. It's almost paradoxical. Let me explain.

When we care for another, who benefits? Obviously, the person (or animal) to whom we’re directing our care, but have you noticed the way it uplifts you, too? We might initially be drawn to help someone out of care and concern for them (as we should!) But as we continue to act in caring ways, we start to notice that this service is also a way of caring for ourselves. It heals us, it connects us, and it takes us beyond our narrow, myopic self-focus. How lovely! It's almost as if we were designed to care.

And now, consider the idea of self-care. It's become almost cliche; some would say it's selfish…But what if you contemplate the concept of self-care for the sake of others? What?! Think about it. The reality is that we can't serve others from an empty cup. When we become committed to radically caring for ourselves, to doing the things that fill us up, we will be in the optimal state to then turn outward and extend that care to others. What a concept!

Care, it turns out, is like a gift that keeps on giving. Whether we choose to care for ourselves or another, it creates a beautiful feedback loop of benevolence and blessings, touching everyone with a little sprinkle of its goodness. It really is quite miraculous. It is my hope that we will all remember this beautiful principle of care--and to apply it liberally and joyously, toward both ourselves and others. Can you imagine the ripple effect of a decision like that?

Namaste,
